Chess Set and Board Instructions by Roleigh Martin August 05, 1995 Copyright 1995, Roleigh Martin All Rights Reserved. Read Me First ! =============== Print this document out. In Windows, you can run the program, Notepad, to open this file and print it out. Or at the DOS prompt, you can type: COPY CREATE.TXT PRN and press ENTER. Cutting Instructions For The Pieces =================================== 1. Buy a set of Red/Blue/Poker Chips -- one box will make 2 complete sets of Chinese Chess, so you would want to print out two sets of boards too. Use Red and White Chips for one set; and Blue and White Chips for the other set. Do only one set at a time to avoid confusion. 2. Buy a box of Avery Laser Labels, size 5160, which is 1"x2&5/8" in a 3 labels per row format. 3. Install the Paint Shop Pro software--if you are using a newer version, I recommend printing with the older version. The game board/pieces were tested on both a HP LaserJet IIP and a HP Deskjet 560C. Hopefully, because it is a Windows based program, nearly any printer (excepting daisy wheel printers) should work. To install, follow these instructions: A. Get at the MS-DOS prompt (either under or out of Windows. B. Make a new directory, type: C: MD \PSP102 CD \PSP102 MD TEMP CD TEMP C. While still at the DOS prompt with the current directory, C:\PSP102\TEMP\, wherever you have the self-extracting EXE file, PSP102.EXE, type in that path in place of the string "A:\" in the example that follows below: A:\PSP102.EXE D. Get into (or back into) Windows and at the Program Manager Window, Click on "file" then "new" then "item" and type in the command line: C:\PSP102\TEMP\SETUP.EXE then click OK. The program will be installed for you and an icon will be made for you. Click on that icon now (after the install). (Later, if you want, you can delete the directory and the files in C:\PSP102\TEMP\; if you do not know how to do that, then just ignore this step.) Note: if you have problems installing PSP102, then refer to the file, README.PSP. 4. Don't put the labels in the printer yet; first use 3 sheets of white paper. Open up the file, SET_MAP.PCX, and print out that file on plain paper. It provides a visual reference guide to help follow these instructions. Then open the files, WXIAN_A.PCX and WXIAN_T.PCX and print them out for visual help on the board piece-setup phase (at the end, when you are actually ready to play). 5. Note: practice this step first with plain, cheap paper if you do not have a HP Laserjet IIp. On my HP Deskjet 560C, the pieces were slightly too small "as is" for the same Avery labels that worked on my HP Laserjet IIp. I had to use the Paint Shop Pro (the shareware that is included) command, resize, to make the pieces large enough to fit evenly within each "label row." As you practice with plain paper, put the printed out pieces against a very bright light against a plain Avery label sheet to see if they will line up right. Now insert the Avery labels (two sheets) in the printer. Open up the two files, CHI_SET.PCX and PIC_SET.PCX, and print them out--you'll end up using two sheets of labels, one for each file--alltogether this makes one Chinese/Korean Chess Set (Westernized Side labels on one side of the poker chips; Chinese Side labels on the other side). Cut around the circles. 6. Place the "Chinese Side" labels on the center part of the poker chips; the black pieces have a black background. Refer to the above drawing to remind you what piece is what. If a black and white piece are identically drawn except for the colors, they are not shown in both colored depictions above. Place the "Westernized Side" labels on the center part of the other side of the poker chips--make sure that both sides maintain the same color and piece though. For the White "Westernized Side" labels, the color Grey is used. It is obvious which "Chinese Side" pieces are white and Grey was not needed--remember a Black background for both "Westernized" and "Chinese" sides means the piece is a black piece. Cutting Instructions For The Board ================================== 1. Follow the above instructions first--then the software will be installed. Run the program, Paint Shop Pro (see above for help). 2. Insert plain paper in the printer--you'll need four sheets of paper and Scotch brand magic tape (my favorite). 3. Open, one at a time (before opening another file, you'll print out the open file first), the four files: CCBD_BLH.PCX, CCBD_BRH.PCX, CCBD_TLH.PCX, CCBD_TRH.PCX. The files have wording in one of the 4 corners: Bottom Right Hand - Lay this on the floor or table. Bottom Left Hand - Cut the right edge (right up to the black line) of the paper off and lay on top and to the left-side along the Bottom Right Hand. Top Left Hand - Cut the bottom edge (right up to the black polka dots) and lay on top and onto the top side of the Bottom Left Hand sheet, lining up the polka dots. Top Right Hand - Cut the bottom edge (right up to the black polka dots) and cut the left hand edge (right up to the black line) and lay on top and onto the right edge of the Top Left Hand sheet and also onto the top side of the Bottom Right Hand sheet, lining up the polka dots. Now tape the four sheets together on the top and bottom side. If you want a permanent board, put the board between two sheets of plastic glass that you can get at the lumber store or just tape the top side to the bottom side of one sheet of plastic glass and protect the bottom with 2" wide tape.
